Sometimes You Should Retreat Before Pressing On

Before modern military tactics were developed, it was common for the General to move to an elevated position to observe the battle. Typically, soldiers fighting face-to-face with their enemy were so focused on survival that they lacked perspective on whether they were winning or losing until the battle was over. The General’s view, however, prompted adjustments to increase the likelihood of victory.

Interviewing financial advisor Trent Adams for the holidays was a no-brainer.


If you’re a Consortium Member reading this, you’re likely groaning at an overdone joke.

If not, then allow us to loop you in: a little over 6 months ago, the 34-year-old father of two was diagnosed with a paradigm shifting brain tumor just 2 days before his wedding anniversary. 


To say the news came as a shock is an understatement; Trent and his family were reeling. Within days, he was scheduled for surgery at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.

Trent says, “The night before surgery, I said my goodbyes to family and friends. When I hugged their necks, I prayed it wouldn't be the last time. At 4 AM on March 21, 2016, I kissed my boys on their foreheads as they slept and thought: maybe this is it. It was by far the hardest thing I have ever done.”


When Trent joined Integrated Financial Group’s consortium of independent financial planners in 2015, he had no idea how much the relationships he formed with his fellow advisors would impact his battle with cancer. Trent returned to the office shortly after surgery because, well, you can’t keep a good man down. The normalcy of routine, daily interactions with colleagues and clients, and caring culture at IFG helped him cope with recovery and face treatments with more courage than he admits he might have otherwise mustered.


Trent is the owner and managing partner of Magnolia Financial Services. For the past 13 years, Trent has been helping families and businesses navigate the complexities of their financial lives and protect their legacies for future generations. Service and education form the fundamentals of Trent’s independent wealth management practice: they’re a small firm with big hearts for helping clients work towards financial fulfilment.


Looking ahead, Trent says that cancer has given him a kind of clarity and unique perspective he wants to share. He counsels clients every day on the importance of planning ahead, and now he can provide personal insight to back up his recommendations.


“Hug your families. Go the extra mile to make memories and mend fences—at any cost. You only get so many trips around the sun, so make them count."
