Sometimes You Should Retreat Before Pressing On

Wednesday, February 01, 2017 Bookmark and Share

Before modern military tactics were developed, it was common for the General to move to an elevated position to observe the battle. Typically, soldiers fighting face-to-face with their enemy were so focused on survival that they lacked perspective on whether they were winning or losing until the battle was over. The General’s view, however, prompted adjustments to increase the likelihood of victory.

The Treehouse Project

Tuesday, June 28, 2016

The archetypal American youngster dirtied his hands playing in the creek, hit homers in the park, and played fetch with his bandana-clad golden retriever. This young man was loved and mentored by his Dad, and the relationship was peppered with frequent father-son outings and projects like ball games, fishing trips, and treehouses.

Of course, not everyone had a Norman Rockwell childhood, but for the kids that did, it reinforced the importance of strong bonds and hard work. Invaluable lessons. And hopefully, for those who missed these values early on, someone somewhere along the way taught them so they were carried into adulthood.

Sometimes we find as grownups there are spaces and places that mesh with these values better than others. If we’re lucky, we get to work for a business that weaves them into their daily operations. If we’re less fortunate, we struggle to find a balance between our conscience and a paycheck.

At Integrated Financial Group, a truly collaborative professional culture evolved from founder and CEO Don Patrick’s dream for the company beginning in 2003. Just as the treehouse quickly grew from an idea to a plan to an actual space within a tree housing countless adventures, Integrated Financial Group’s ‘Brain Trust’ of advisors grew around the core principles of ethics, shared professional standards, and a passion for their clients’ financial well-being.

Let’s think back to when the father-son Treehouse Project started: it was just a big idea. The father probably talked about it on the par three, and the son bragged to his friends at recess. Some believed them and some didn’t. In much the same way, Don Patrick had a dream for a place where independent financial advisers would have the opportunity to share expertise with top-notch staff in premier office space. He talked about it. Some advisors embraced the vision, and some didn’t.

The Treehouse Project continues, and the father and son drive to the local hardware store. There they discovered a plethora of saws, 4x4s, drills, and fasteners. What next? A skilled intermediary likely popped up to offer some assistance, but we all know there’s more than one way to skin a cat. And there’s definitely more than one way to build a treehouse. Similarly, the landscape of independence as a financial planner is filled with lots of options, and it often takes someone who’s ‘been there, done that’ to help navigate the right choices for a financial services business.

Imagine the father standing in the hardware store, overwhelmed at the vastness of his project, yet determined to see it through. Then imagine someone tapping the father on the shoulder saying, “Excuse me. I couldn’t help but overhear you talking to the store clerk. I built a treehouse for my girls last summer, and I’m happy to share how I did it.” Ecstatic, the father and son listen eagerly to the man in the store tell them how to build their dream. After 20 minutes, the men exchange phone numbers, earnest handshakes, and then part ways. For the father and son, the Treehouse Project is now an executable plan.

The advisor members of Integrated Financial Group act in much the same way as the man in the hardware store: they freely share advice with peers. They make it a point to pass along best practices and strategies because they know the best possible outcome evolves from the sharing of successful ideas and experiences. Integrated Financial Group’s Executive Team is your local Ace Hardware store: specialized, experienced, and equipped for each advisors’ success. With their concentrated support, the odds are in your favor. Finally, LPL is the Home Depot of independence for financial planners…the hub of powerful, nationally recognized tools available for those professionals committed to providing clients with objective advice. As a trio, these team players get the job done. Or in other words, they get the Treehouse Project completed.
